CHANGING THE GAME: CONFERENCE REPORT Posted by Kate O'Halloran on December 12, 2016

PCU Conference

Resource for London

PCU’s first campaign conference was held at Resource for London on Saturday 3rd December.

The conference was to discuss and agree two codes of practice which the Union will now campaign for employers to adopt: one for unpaid work to “get the hours” for qualification, the other for paid work for charities and other organisations.

The day was open to both members and non-members, some people were new to PCU and, of those, several joined at the end of the day.

It was encouraging that the day was attended not only by members with experience as trainees and workers within a wide range of organisations, but also by members who are themselves training providers, employers, supervisors, representatives of regulatory bodies.

The mix made for a breadth and depth of lively and engaged discussion.

The codes, which had previously had input from as many members who had offered it (around 20) and had been through several drafts, were further discussed by those present. Amendments were suggested and voted on, and both codes were adopted in the final versions (see codes of practice website page).

In the afternoon we broke into smaller groups, looking at particular themes and issues, focusing on how to take the codes forward in our own fields. Notes made by some of the groups are included below- thanks to those who sent them in, I’ve added them unedited.

Thanks to all who attended and made this such an enjoyable and successful event.
